Hana is a Bishopdale College intern serving intermediates at St Barnabas, Stoke. I asked her about why she chose Bishopdale and how she’s grown through the year.
Hana: I was finishing high school and wasn’t ready to jump straight into university – it’s a big investment and I wasn’t sure what to study. I wanted a kind of gap year where I could grow in myself and in my knowledge of God. In one week, three different people mentioned the Bishopdale internship to me, and there was funding available, so I thought, “Why not?” I applied, and I’m so glad I did.
Hana: Honestly, awesome. My knowledge has expanded so much, there’s just so much to learn. I’ve also found an amazing community. It’s been a really rich year.
Hana: I’m interning at St Barnabas with a focus on intermediates and youth ministry. I usually have around three Bishopdale lectures a week. Then there’s planning, meetings, coordinating with our youth leadership team to plan youth nights, and on Sundays I run the intermediates group during the service. I also help my supervisor with other jobs as needed.
Hana: It’s the best thing ever, I’m not even kidding. My mentor is fantastic. Having someone there purely for your growth, who supports you, gives guidance, and offers an unbiased perspective, has been huge. It’s helped me process change and things I’m learning or confused about. Mentoring has probably been the best part of the year.
Hana: The size, in a good way. It’s tight-knit, so you really get to know people and hear their stories. I was the youngest student this year, and one of my classmates was in their 70s!
That diversity in a small community is a blessing. The culture is very relational, lecturers know you, invest in you, and even get involved in the fun stuff. It’s a great community.
Hana: What are you waiting for? Go for it. Definitely apply for the scholarship – the funding really helps with day-to-day needs and trips like block weekends up north, which are amazing for team bonding.
