Prayer is the heartbeat and fuel for everything we do and that includes a thriving children and families ministry. It’s through prayer that we invite God’s presence, seek his wisdom, and depend on his strength to guide the hearts of our tamariki and their whānau. In a world filled with distractions and challenges, prayer helps families stay connected to God and to one another, building a firm spiritual foundation that lasts a lifetime.
When children learn to pray, they discover that God is always listening, cares deeply for them, desires a personal relationship with them and desires to speak to them. Prayer teaches faith, trust, gratitude, and dependence on the Lord. It also encourages families and communities to grow together and to seek God's guidance in every season.
Ministry to children and families is less about programmes and activities and more about nurturing life long disciples who will follow Christ for generations. Prayer empowers leaders, strengthens families, and helps sow seeds of faith that bear lasting fruit.
“We will not hide these truths from our children,” writes the psalmist, “we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders” (Psalm 78:4).
As we faithfully pray for and with children, we participate in God's work of passing faith from one generation to the next, inspiring young hearts to know, love, and follow Jesus throughout their lives. When we pray together we also remind our whole church family that upholding our children, young people and families is vital.
I have created what I’m calling a “prayer match” that includes the names of all our ministers and children's ministry leaders across every parish in the Nelson Diocese. Each parish has been “matched” with one or two other parishes in an encouragement to pray for each other. You can do this at your Sunday services, Sunday schools, vestry meetings or at home to encourage weekly prayer for another church so that all our ministries across our diocese receive extra prayer support and encouragement for the rest of the year. Think about how many children, youth, and families that we can cover in the top of the South through our prayers and relationships!
